This short video illustrate the techniques required for the inspeciton and test of a small electrical installation. The purpose is to determine if the installation conforms with BS 7671. This will possibly be mystifying to any American viewers - good luck.

  • Thanks for the comment, in reply, when testing an installation with a number of distribution boards, you have to break the installation down into areas, each of which will be that served by a single db. The external line-earth loop impedance of that db will be the Ze of that particular zone. However, to be precise the external loop impedance measured is that of the distribution circuit.

The actual Ze of the installation as a whole will be measured at a point as close to the origin.

  • Some sloppy practices here.

Poor safe isolation procedure. Once you have isolated, how do you know the voltstick still actually works without retesting on a known source?

When doing your Ze you need to really disconnect the earthing conductor to remove parallel earth paths which will artificially lower your Ze reading.

  • Oh dear, if you do this job as a living rather than "learn" it out of books you will realise that the Ze referred to is the Ze of the db not the installation. Therefore removing the earthing conductor will result in an infinity reading. As for the voltage stick not failing to work between two successive tests, seconds apart and the coincidence of a failing disconector, the probability of those events is vanishingly small. I have to job to do !

  • hi just seen your inspection test vid in Popular London,i agree with your comment in reguard to dragons comments. Its not always possible to remove earth to do Ze test. It does state that in Christopher Kitchers second edition Inspection and testing and certification. The only question i do have is i always had Ze down for being a measurement of external ,being the resistance of the supply transformer winding, the supply phase conductor, and the earth return path of the supply. • mate you have to test your multimeter by testing the actual istallation and a working earth, then de- energise then test to see if it is de-energised then isolate by locking an tagging out. please respect electricity as an electrician you should and not get too complacent

  • @smiley235

You may possess more time-served experience than myself, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can take the higher ground on safety - just because your 'foolproof' method of 'safe' isolation hasn't yet resulted in an injury to anyone.

Can I assume that when you have your own annual assessment by your competent person scheme assessor you use your voltstick method?

Did you also use your voltstick method when you sat your 2391 inspection & testing practical and theory exams ?

  • @don1dragon Like mentioned, you really need to actually have some experience as a sparky on the field before dictating do's and donts. I would personally use my multi tester but sometimes, when all you have is a volt stick, just flick the isolator on and off a few times to verify its off.

  • Good circuit inspections and video. Cheers

  • Well done pal.

  • Another good video, keep them coming!!
