Congressman Ted Poe (R-TX) speaks on the inadequacy of efforts to secure the U.S.-Mexico border. Poe mentions that the U.S. Border Patrol does as good a job as they are allowed to, but their agents can only apprehend illegal aliens within a 25 mile corridor from the border. Any illegal alien who manages to get 26+ miles from the border is outside the enforcement area for the U.S. Border Patrol, at which point local sheriffs are charged with dealing with them.

Sheriff Departments are woefully under-funded, and are outspent and outgunned by the cartels moving illegal drugs across the border and into the United States. Rather than offer financial aid to Mexican Government authorities, who are often corrupt and collaborate with the cartels, Congressman Poe suggests providing this aid to local sheriffs in border counties.

Criminals such as drug smugglers often illegally enter the country, commit crimes on U.S. soil [e.g., distribution or transferring illegal drugs], then flee over the border into Mexico [outside of the jurisdiction of federal authorities]. Thus, crime in border states is often a direct result of the federal government's absolute failure to secure our borders and prevent people from coming in illegally.

  • I was with you, ChangeUSA, up until the part with with putting religion back in the schools. hmmm.... Bad Idea.

  • My personal opinion is to present a better alternative. Look at how children are these days. There was a survey done in the early 1960's, which was repeated (same questions) in another survey in the early 2000's re what were teachers biggest problems with kids in school. Results in 1960's: cutting in line, talking out of turn, gum chewing in class, etc. 2000's: assault, drugs, taking weapons to school, etc. In the early 60's, prayer was forbidden in school, and you see where things headed.

  • The costs are staggering. The Cochise County, Arizona Health Department spends as much as 30 percent of its annual $9 million budget on illegal aliens. The Copper Queen Hospital in Bisbee, Arizona, has spent $200,000 in uncompensated services out of a net operating budget of $300,000.

  • I am from nyc and I wish that ted poe ran here..Id vote for him! He always speaks his mind..refreshing!

  • I grew up more than 25 miles from the border, and I have personally seen the white vans which Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses to deport illegal immigrants. ICE does this because it is their responsibility, and not the responsibility of local sheriffs.

ICE is a division of the Department of Homeland Security, as is U.S. Customs and Border Protection. There is no agency called the U.S. Border Patrol. You and Poe need to stop equivocating.

  • I am a native Texan and we are very proud to have Ted Poe as a state senator. It is going to take people such as you and I, the American public to stand with these great leaders to make a change. There are a lot politically illiterate people in this nation that don't really have a clue as to what is really going on. The majority of people don't even know the difference between a senator and congressman or for that matter who their representatives are! Start with religion back in the schools.

  • Its about TIME !

  • One True American...If only the congress was truely listening. Texas should be proud to have someone like this in congress. I only wish I could vote for him.
