@McLarenMercedes I am quite familiar with Garros. Unfortunatly the deflector gear was dangerous to say the least. From 1915 till early 16 the French were not doing well even if the Fokker was a piece of garbage it had the advantage. Now when the Nieuport 11 came around the Eindeckers got cut to pieces.
The first ace of the war was French. The first plane to have a fixed machinegun firing through the propeller (using deflector plates to protect the propeller) was also French. As Roland Garros was downed his plane was studied by a certain Anthony Fokker who got an idea of how to improve the design.
France was arguable the leading nation in aviation from 1909 to 1915.
if you think that's dangerous try having some crazies in the Imperial German Air Force shooting at you while you are flying around...welcome to the French Air Force 1915

Announcer: "There it goes, isn't that a nice sound?"
What, your voice? If you want me to listen to the airplane, don't talk over it to tell me it sounds great

The pilot woman Adrienne Bolland was the first human being to fly above the Andes cordillera on such a plane! Seems over-realistic but true.
