Given all the labor, I have always considered maple syrup at $40 gallon to be great value, and vowed I would never make my own. Then came Sydney, who came home from kindergarten intent on making "maple syreeup" with her Dad. Can't say no to that! So we cobbled together some taps, buckets and a makeshift evaporator. After a long cold winter, it felt great to be out in the warm sun, tapping the trees and boiling sap. What kids can teach you - I never had so much fun in my life!

  • Rick, Using this video clip to teach the Grade 4 kids a unit on changing Matter here in Saudi Arabia. Good to "see" you'all. Liz and Caroline Cassell

  • I love the old school drill and the extension cord! HAHa!

  • I was watching for the fact that in our valley we have the right conditions for maple, there used to be maple here, but it seems they do not do this anymore. It is sad that so many people do not realize the wonderful life giving fruits of nature. Thank you for this vid and for a child that is growing up to know how wonderful it is to be healthy and know about nature and how we should harvest and be grateful. Cheers

  • at our house it's maple syrple. lol

  • Hmmmm..... maybe they should boil it first, A little girl learning in nature, it couldn't get better than that. You could wrap yourself in plastic wrap and learn about maple syrup on you tube.

  • The boiling and filtration process would take care of any impurities I am sure.

  • Well, all urine that passes through the earth, is evaperated into the atmosphere and comes down as rain is far more acceptable to me than someones hands touching my syrup that when I don't know where those hands just were. Just my opinion.

  • @martiebaby No doubt it is odd-sounding from an adult, I couldn't resist emulating my 5 year old's pronunciation. And don't worry, this back yard sugar operation is for our use only. But did it ever occur to you that the water you drink was at one time dinosaur urine? :)

  • Nice video how many trees did you tap to make those 8 gallons?
