@colindhowell Ahhhh! Thanks for clearing that up. Do you know how engine with a single supercharger were called? Also, do you know of any force fed planes running on turbo only?
-
@machoverspeed Even that isn't right. Empty weight of the P-47 was more like four and a half to five and a half tons. With blatant errors like that, whoever edited the script for this show should be sacked.
-
@turbinetechca No, they aren't. "Turbo", like "turbocharger", is what you get when people start looking for a shorter way to say a mouthful like "turbosupercharger". You've described the P-47's system correctly, but the term "turbosupercharger" is not meant to describe the whole system. It's simply the full term for a supercharger driven by an exhaust turbine as opposed to one driven by an engine crankshaft. As you've described, the P-47 had one of each.
-
That is the problem when all WWII movies come from the same country.
-
the p-47 is one of the finest high altitude fighter. It has a 2 stage turbo charger system. Pilots affectionately called them the 7 ton milk bottle.
and it was the p-47s who pushed back the LW from the channel to Germany before the advent of the p-51s. the novice jug pilots slugged it out with the veteran yellow noses of the famed abbeville boys in their 109s and 190s.
and most importantly, it can absorb a lot of punishment as it can dish out to its adversary.
-
@flightdeckreviews That is completely false. The P47 was designed from the beginning as a high altitude fighter and it was one of the best of the war. The top two aces in the ETO were P47 pilots and something like 7 of the top 10 US ETO aces were P47 pilots. It was only later adapted for ground support and became a multirole fighter when it was found that it could sustain heavy damage and still fly. But it is still a fighter period.
-
@bigkitten Yes I completely agree with you! Why compare a ground attack aircraft to a pure air combat aircraft?!
It was used mainly to attack tanks and infatry vechicles not to fight 109s and 190s. Also its the father of the best ground attack fighter in the world right now: The A-10 Warthog/Thunderbolt II! The reason the called it the thunderbolt II is because the the Thunderbolt IS and always WILL BE a ground attack aircraft!
-
@2:32 "...and plus also, it could take a lot of damage." This guy huukd on foniks.
-
@irish89055 It's looks more like a F-105 Thunderchief.
-
is that an F 100 the jug flies over at the end??
the series should be called "America´s Deadliest Aircraft"

People, "turbo" and "turbosupercharger" is the very same thing. And that happens to be a supercharger that is driven not by a shaft from the engine directly, but by a turbine placed in the exhaust.
Thermodynamically, it's a much better idea than a supercharger. Don't know that many WW2 aircrafts used it though. P-47 and P-38...
