    When a noble woman married a commoner, he didn't become nobility. If a male peer married a commoner, she would become part of the nobility by marriage. Unfair and sexist, I know. Since her father wasn't a baron and couldn't become one by marriage, Danielle couldn't inherit the title. he was just extremely rich. And she's a servant because her step-mother reduced her to that state after her father's death. Hope it makes sense :)
