My 2R kids today took part in the Ocean Park Octopus Education Program. It's an excellent scheme that mixes significant science learning into a leisurely day of frolicking and playing within the premises.
We without a doubt took full advantage of our discretionary time at the park as the kids went on rides, played games and visited exhibits. Nevertheless, we did actually get some learning done, an hour's worth, by my best estimate. We attended a course on pandas and a seminar on dolphins and of the two, the former was an exemplar of interactive, small-class teaching while the latter bored us to somnolent bits inside a stuffy room.
The Panda course instructor Amy ran the lesson professionally and smoothly, showing us an interactive video before taking us into the hands-on laboratory where we examined skulls, feces and bamboo leaves during a lesson whose objective was to teach students about the relationship between teeth, diet and feces. Supplied with the requisite worksheets, skulls and microscopes, the kids enthusiastically examined the teeth and feces, and discussed their observations; later, each group shared their findings.
