on certain brands of styrofoam cups, the is a little printed letter on the bottom of the cup (the top side in the trick). this is the one that you want to be over the knife. usually it's so discreet if you show an audience member it won't really be noticeable. but you will see it. now I've seen this trick done by another magician, he stamped these cups while they rotated in a fast succession. essentially found the knife even before the audience knew what was going on.
