http://www.ted.com William Ury, author of "Getting to Yes," offers an elegant, simple (but not easy) way to create agreement in even the most difficult situations -- from family conflict to, perhaps, the Middle East.
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate. The reason this is rated highly on ted.com and not on Youtube is because the average intelligence of the YouTube community pales in comparison. Reading the comments here I realized that there is a glaring lack of appreciation for out-of-the box thinking and also an inability to understand subtle differences in mindset and how these are relevant in the larger picture. He does *not* have answers but he does have a supposed 'first-step' from which other can progress.

What i love about TED is you can click a video, not have a clue what the titles pertains to, and learn amazing thinks you wouldn't have bothered looking at anyway.

The story wasn't solved by a woman. It was solved by Imam Ali, the prophet of Islam Muhammad's son in law and leader of the Islamic world after him.

Abraham stands for hospitality? Same guy who heard a voice in his head and went to kill his son? Same one who made a kid with his slave and then casted out both the mother and the kid out to the desert to die, when his wife got pregnant? That guy? Yeah, right.
All the other stuff is bs too. I say it as an Israeli Jew and a peace activist. We don't need a 3d side, only we, Israelis and Palestinians can solve our problems. And we for sure don't need any more religion here.

I just picked up "Getting to Yes", it's a pretty solid book about principled negotiation. It makes waaaay more sense in comparison to the default positional bargaining.

Hostility to Hospitality.
Re-frame the way we look at things to get to that hospitality mindset.
Not easy but not impossible.
It takes strength to be courageous and endure and walk that hard road.

The problem with his argument is that people are so different. I personally did not agree with his interpretation of what the story of Abraham "stands for." He assumes that all would agree that it's about hospitality. But humans can and do disagree on ANYTHING. Finding a common story will be difficult. Even if we say "do it for the kids" people will have different ideas about what's good for their kids. They may think it means killing people who have different values.

So idolatry can be cured by more idolatry. Great.
