They didn't clear the samples for Paul's Boutique. It was before sampling laws went into effect in 1991.

1960s and 1970's. Kool's Gang was originally a funky jazz band, raw, loose, and very dancible. They later changed their style to a more commercial vein, to survive the disco era.
