Rush's The Spirit of Radio is a progressive rock classic released in 1980 on the album Permanent Waves. In this iVideosongs title, Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson shows you how he plays the distinctive opening riff featuring fast pull-offs, and how to use different voicings and droning open strings to create the effect of several guitars. This intermediate-level, medium-tempo song can be played with an electric guitar in standard tuning. This is a sample of a 43 minute video available for download at iVideosongs.com.

  • These clips should be twice as long.

  • @gorillabelly1 The full length lessons by Alex Lifeson and others are on our website, Amazon VOD and iTunes. They are about $3 to $5 each and go 30-60 minutes for in-depth chord for chord, note for note with tabs and notation in the vids.

  • @odinstreet I know what you mean, I play guitar, I was showing my grandson the riff for "Shaking all over" I had a hard time doing it slow so he could follow.

  • Thank you Alex unbelievable to think would have ever been possible, everyday miracles!

  • @stuka52 ever see a kenyan marathon runner run slow? that's just not what they do. most of Alex's practice on this riff was probably done at performance tempo once he achieved proficiency at said performance tempo. what does that mean? well, his muscle memory is more comfortable playing the riff at performance tempo as opposed to otherwise. just food for thought.

  • be nice if it was more that 30 seconds

  • @BlackLink27 He's just demonstrating it,I don't know what he 'expects'.

  • @lifeson46 well said. May i also congratulate you on your fantastic choice of username!

  • He looks like he's getting into it at the beginning :D

    ROCK ON RUSH!!

  • Who else learned this riff in an hour?

  • It looks like even he has a hard time playing it slow.lol
