My Singapore trip ends happily with a hunt for the super delectable Bengawan Solo Kueh Lapis. The cake is lovingly put together by alternating layer by layer by layer by layer by layer....you get the idea

  • • Singaporeans pronounce 'flour' as /flɑ:/. A girl who grew up in the US went to a Singapore school and was 'corrected' to pronounce flour as /flɑ:/ instead of /flaʊ-ə/.

Singaporean teachers pronounce and teach their pupils to pronounce flour as / flɑ:/. And in an oral examination, if this word appears in the reading passage, the pupils who pronounce it correctly are penalised.

---- I'd like native speakers from England, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to post in to prove me right.

  • @TheSpeaknoevil You're right as rain, at least that's the way I was taught almost 3 decades ago. Are they still teaching it that way today?

  • Bengawan Solo kueh lapis is superb lapis, best on earth !

  • @expertise1990 You're damn right it is.
