This Film is an intimate music portrait of American composer Frank Zappa, who lives secluded from the outside world at his home and music studio in Los Angeles, California. For the past ten years Zappa in composing has turned away from Rock and Roll music - for which he first became famous - and has been working on new, contemporary, orchestral electronic music; in solitude and beyond any commercial conventions or commitments. It is the first time that Zappa has allowed a film crew to study him during compositional work, actually filming the first moments of a new compositional process. By contrast, in a staged interview Zappa gives comments on music. This film seeks to reveal the sensetivities of Zappa's personality and character also beyond narrative content.

  • Wait a minute. Was Zappa talking with Xenakis 22 minutes in?

  • @badazzpresidents23 It was Xenakis, and who else would measure and find out mathematically all the various notes which possibly could be played on a wooden fingerboard of an instrument before composing?

  • @barun432 Very few other composers. Harry Partch is one other I can think of.

  • @badazzpresidents23 Partch was unique in his own way, but your right, there are very few composers like that.

  • thanks for posting! does anyone know if the music zappa is composing in this documentary ended up on a album?

  • @beatleswhitealbum Zappa composed on the synclavier in several albums. He started with

Boulez Conducts Zappa- The Perfect Stranger

    Francesco Zappa

    Thing Fish

    Them or Us

    Jazz from Hell

But the particular pieces you hear here ended up in the album Civilization Phaze III, which is a culmination of Zappa's synclavier music and a very unique Zappa album from the 60s Lumpy Gravy.

  • Thank you so much for sharing, lol at 25:54

  • @barun432 Honestly I need to learn more about what Xenakis did. I understand his works and ideas at a very anecdotal level. That being said, just audibly he's one of my favorite composers.
