NEW SERIES: Hudson river ditching

On 15 January 2009, an Airbus A320 as US Airways Flight 1549 encounters a bird strike with a flock of Canadian geese just 1 and a half minutes after taking off from LaGuardia Airport in New York en route to Charlotte/Douglas Airport. The flight just lasted about 5 minutes when the plane ditched into the Hudson River, amazingly leaving all on board alive. The ditching is described as "the most successful ditching of all time" by the Guinness World Records.

  • this happened on my birthday...

  • It worked thanks to a brilliant ex-fighter Captain, extremely experienced and competent keepings his nerves under control and not giving up in an extreme situation that many other would have failed in. I salute him and his crew and just wish that if I ever end up as passenger in a crashing plane I will have a pilot like him in the front left seat.

  • Voice over: "But by the end of the day.....they'll be the most famous crew on the planet....."

  • D: AMAZING!!
