Yes, many physicians have treated schizophrenia without using antipsychotics. They include:

--Dr. Abram Hoffer, who has treated over 30,000 patients at his Orthomolecular Vitamin Center. He primarily used niacin - that is vitamin B3.

--Dr. Carl Pfeiffer has also treated over 30,000 mental illness patients at his brain bio clinic.

There are many other alternative approaches to treating schizophrenia without antipsychotics. One of the famous ones is called Soteria. The Soteria Research Project was founded by psychiatrist Loren Mosher who opened the first Soteria House in 1971. It was sort of like a safe haven for schizophrenic patients -- quiet, calming environment that respected everyone's individuality. Soteria created mental health services based on a social, not a medical model. The staff members were treating patients as peers.

The Soteria project was admired by many professionals around the world. And it was heavily criticized as irresponsible or ineffective by the others.

Lately, there has been a growing interest in Soteria, and thus it became a subject of reviews that compared Soteria with conventional, medication-based approaches. Review found that Soteria was equally, and in some cases more effective in the treatment of people diagnosed with first- or second-episode schizophrenia than traditional medication-based approach.

So, to sum up, there are quite a few alternatives to psychotropic drugs for treating schizophrenia.

  • @jaco0bx Hey man. I'll check out your blog. Let me know how your battle is going. Im afraid I might be developing schizophrenia but Im not sure. One psychologist that I know about that you should look into is Carl Jung. He fought and conquered schizophrenia without the use of any drugs.

  • Hey guys. I'm battling from schizophrenia. I'm not asking for money or views or anything, but just for support and for people to hear me out. My psychiatrist said to let people know about your problem, but everyone thinks I'm weird and my family cannot understand or take me seriously. I made a blog about my problems, and I hope we can talk on there. My blog is battlingschizophrenia.blogspot.com . Fellow schizophrenics, you should also come. We can fight the battle together.

  • Soteria and Mosher are missed. Main$tream psychiatrists are pharma-pimps. Hurting other people's loved ones with experimental drugs is not respectable. Psychiatry is the profession of shame.

  • Incredibly pretty girls - you idiot- INCREDIBLY PRETTY GIRLS! Don't you see, you numbskull - how they lured you in by your base instincts to stare mindlessly at members of the fairer sex who, along with their heavenly features - also seem to have some depth, imagination and intellect! IT'S A TRAP! ----------------------------- Sorry for this back-and-forth betwixt my id and my logical/ethical/spiritual side. : ) Rant off

  • Dr. Pfieffer's experiments giving prisoners LSD and hallucenigenic drugs really bothers me. Can you imagine being in a prison cell or solitary confinement ( bad enough, huh?! ) and being given drugs that make you freak out?! Reminds one of those hard rock lyrics - "Despite all my rage I'm still just a rat in a cage..." . OK, I'm trying to get your yuk yuk humor treatment of these serious subjects, but... I just can't. I still am compelled to watch these videos and I just don't know whyyyy...

  • "Drugs that BLOCK Cannabinoid Receptors Seem Problematic

Merck announced that its drug Taranabant (CB1 blocker) had caused unacceptable side effects (anxiety & depression) in a Phase III trial with obese patients. When an FDA panel unanimously rejected Sanofi’s application for Rimonabant (CB1 blocker). It cited sharp increase rates of anxiety, depression, SUICIDAL thoughts & mood disorders."

  • "If I had MS my drug of choice, Cannabis try it. For every age related disease the drug that should be tried FIRST in my opinion is Marijuana. Before you go to these dangerous Pharmaceuticals that often have nasty side effects this stuff is working not on one individual target it's working on your whole body. Remember the whole is greater than the sum of the parts, this stuff is working everywhere."
