"Not the cleanest version I've ever done, but not bad considering I've been playing for three hours!"

I mentioned to Tom how there have been people on YouTube wondering what it sounds like when he plays Joplin (he generally doesn't play Joplin -- he once said, "Everybody else plays Joplin, so why should I?"). As the video starts, I specify more clearly "something tasteful" to avoid getting a raucous Joplin number like Maple Leaf or Elite Syncopations.

However, Will Perkins, seated beside me, later said he's never heard Tom do Maple Leaf Rag solo. I hadn't either, and mentioned that I did have one request to hear Tom doing Maple Leaf, so he did -- in three different keys, none of them the original. Stay tuned for video of that.

Euphonic Sounds, by Scott Joplin, dates from 1909. It was a very progressive ragtime piece, forgoing the usual march bass rhythm. You can download the sheet music here: http://imslp.org/wiki/Euphonic_Sounds_(Joplin,_Scott)

You'll have to copy'n'paste that above link; YouTube doesn't like parentheses in URLs.

This performance was after the March 2010 meeting of the Mother Lode Ragtime Society, at the Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium in Sutter Creek, California.

  • Awesome playing =)

By the way is that a vintage Casio I spy on your wrist?

  • Yes

  • Piano sounds perfect for ragtime.

  • Excellent song, i believe your interperation of this song is about as good as it was supposed to be played back in the 1900's. The kind of piano that this song was played on also helped the effects of the rags, thank you and keep the rags alive.

  • man this rag is tasteful :D

    but no really great playing!

  • This rag is so good, it always sounds fresh everytime I hear it - it never gets stale! Tom plays a great version of this!!! Five stars!!!

  • Yeah Tom!!! love the way he plays.

  • @AceWissle i bet he knows hundreds of songs

  • Nice!
