Bastianini, Warren, McNeil, Merrill, Gobbi ... all of these were wonderful singers and artistes, but the claim that they were in some way or manner BETTER than the current singers of the late 20th and early 21st centuries is plain nonsense. Nucci, Cappucilli, Milnes, Hvorostovsky, Hynninen, Quilico, Hampson and the list can go on and on and they ALL have a place in the annals of time in the operatic world. Even someone like Keanlyside has his place and is a wonderful and consummate performer.
