People call Linux the anti-gaming system. Which is completely false. With a little research you could get all the Steam games working up to speed, and they have a great collection of First Person Shooters.
Vista may have those effects "one day" but GNU/Linux has them today. Vista may have those effects "one day" buty they will come at a heavy price on a DirectX system that already consumes an outrageous amount of RAM without those effects. And if you'd rather have "my computer work for me than work for my computer", then you don't want Vista.

Yes you can do about anything with linux. I would still be running it today if I could have found good driver support for my ATI card.
I was stuck at 800x600 due to driver problems.
