Millions of the poorest people in the Philippines live without electricity.

Many are informal settlers who connect themselves to power sources illegally, often leading to fires breaking out in their homes.

Now, a new and cheap solar-light idea is providing an answer for a growing number of Filipinos.

Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from Manila, the Philippines.

  • @Polydynamix well it may not be,but it still impressive

  • I'm from Philippines and I think this is quite creative and resourceful for people like them who can't afford to have electricity. You know what this is way better than tapping electricity illegally. I think the man in the video lives in squatter's area so it's hard for them to make huge windows.

  • our Pilipino people can make real income off of this idea in our country employing them as solar bottle makers throughout the country and make a real decent living. time to get out of our pathetic living standards my kabayans, and let's start making real change in our beloved Philippines! MABUHAY ANG PINOY!

  • who ever came up with this idea in the Philippines should lay over an Official Patent to it. so no other copycats will take advantage of this technological breakthrough.

  • No matter what you say the important thing is they are happy, proud and contented with what they have.*

  • The point of this video is to show people that even without money you can still use cheap/recyclable materials to provide light, so stop telling them to use other materials which are obviously more expensive.

Also you people don't get that if the government can afford to give everyone electricity then they wouldn't need to do this in the first place. The Philippines is not as abundant as the first world countries that's why they just take advantage of what are available to them. And no matter

  • does it work at night??

  • @rbarbieri1 deprive the happiness of thousands for words like Plagiarism. Its not like the guy installing the lights make millions or even thousands of dollars.

  • @Anduy Transparent roofs are outside the range of poor people. :)

  • Regardless of who, when, or where this idea came from. I still commend the Philippine people for putting it to use :)
