More results of my home-made DIY grow lights.

If you'd like to share your construction variation or results, upload a photo at www.tinypic.com and send me the link. I'll post it in the info box to share with everyone.

I planted these Bell Peppers from seed on July 9th, 2009. I took this video on November 15th 2009. I started to get peppers at the end of September. I currently have about 15 peppers on the plants. The more I pollinate, the more peppers I get. It's really a pepper machine!

I'm using a mix of two 300 Watt, 2700k bulbs and two 200 Watt 6700k bulbs. I had 4 200 Watt 6700k bulbs at the start until flowers appeared. I had a few unused fluorescent bulbs that I added above them for a little extra kick.
I'm convinced that these lights can handle anything you would want to grow since these are doing so well.

Bell Peppers are going for $1.00-$1.50 USD each. This will pay for itself. I'm going to pollinate them more to see if I can max them out. I had no idea when I started them that they would get so big. They are doing twice as good as the ones I plant outside in the Summer.

I'll be experimenting with other vegetable and posting results as well as building a few new goodies.

  • So if i am guessing you are running 2- 300 w , 2- 200w, t8 and t5 about 40w ea..... thats 1200 w. how much did all of that cost? thoes bulbs are like $60 ea and the t5 fixture for 1 bulb is $40 i am guessing about the same. Thats about $400.... is that right? so I think you should but in 1 hps and 1 mh uses less energy and has at lease the same result I think.

  • @Ststeve73 Yes, I wanted to see what I could do so I went a little overboard. I have a couple 400watt MH lamps now too which really rock.

  • For the 200w and 300w lights, do they fir into a regular light socket?

  • @mchugh69 Yes they do. Just make sure they don't say mogul socket.

  • How long do you leave the plants under the lights per day? Do you ever give them a rest period? I just bought a grow light from lowes, and this is my first time gardening. I would like to try the lights you are using as well. Good video. Wow, look at those babies grow.

  • They are on 18 hours and 6 off. They are on a timer.

  • Wow great set up! Loved the halved stove pipes as reflectors for you bulbs. And Dude my outdoor pepers weren't even that good looking!

  • Great setup! Prune your plants (just leaves) though by about half. They are wasting too much food on leaves when they have more than enough, when it could go to the fruit. It will make way for more light and air to get through as well.

  • Here is a video of some stills of our hydroponic greenhouse. check them out on my page.

  • You could probably save some electricity by turning off those top T8's. Since light diminishes so fast they are probably not doing anything being that far away from the plants. Normally you would want the flou's just a few inches away like you have your cfl's. Nice set up. Check out my outdoor nft lettuce herb system. facebook.com/junkosgarden. I will have some vids up of my 300 plant indoor grow and 2 grow rooms soon. Good luck! Nice Job!

  • Your plant look so amazing healthy. Could you please post the video how to build a hydroponic system like the one you have ? I live in Wyoming where the winter is so long and I want to build indoor garden. What type of nutrient do you use for your plants.

Thank you, thank you, thank you and thank you.

  • Hi,

Can you give me some detail on your nutrients or fertilizer that you are using in your hydroponics system and which range to keep them in like(ppm or ec values). I have been using Miracle Grow but was curious about your nutrients. Everythings looks great.

    Thanks,

    David

  • yes on 19!!!

  • Thanks for the vids!

  • @boxa888 I hear the ghost pepper has a 1,000,000 scoville rating. That is incredible! That's one drop of pepper juice in 1,000,000 drops of sugar water before the heat cannot be detected. That's one hot pepper! Good luck growing it. I also hear that it is used in pepper spray as a non-lethal weapon for crowd contol by some miltary groups around the world.
