Army ants swarm in thousands or even millions. The soldiers of the army ant Eciton burchellii have fishhook jaws that serve one purpose: to skewer the flesh of any people and other vertebrates that come close. Their attacks are suicidal: the recurved tips of the jaws assure that the ants die embedded in the skin.

For more about ant aggression and warfare, read my 2010 book, Adventures Among Ants.

  • WHY THE FUCK DID YOU LET IT BITE YOU!?!?

  • @7zerozerozero Siafu ants are army ants, but this is another genus.

  • @XxChakraxX well these are Army ants not Siafu ants.

  • It is an individual of the Major caste of the New World species Eciton burchelli. They are native to the Americas south of Mexico.

Fun fact....once they bite the Majors are physically unable to release they're bite and have subsequently been used instead of stitches in the bush.

  • thanks for doing that, they swarm my house and I stay the hell away. dont even spray poison, just let them do their thing.

  • Siafu ants, incredible little creatures.

  • that looks painfull... look at the damn teeth on that ant!
