If you watch the whole movie, the scene before is when she is confronted for smoking and is put into the pit. If she didn't smoke this wouldn't have happened yet. Probably a little later on, but not at this point in the movie.

The movie is about people who's lives are in a mess because of addictions to things like narcotics and alcohol. They have a safe haven where people have to follow rules and it's sort of like rehab. Ellen Page is a teen going through Europe when she meets this group. The group doesn't believe in material possessions and each member must have their head shaved as initiation... or something along those lines.
