Nicolae Covaci of Dragomiresti, Maramures Country , Romania is probably the oldest and the last of the local fiddlers to play in the old style, and - along with his late brothers Gheorghe Ioannei and Vassile Rajna Covaci - the last to have played with Jewish musicians in Maramures in the 1930s. Here he plays a 'huset' dance using the melody that was made popular by the Hungarian band Muzsikas on their "Lost Music of Transylvania" CD in 1993. In the old style the three string kontra viola and bass accompanied the fiddles and I tried to recreate that here.
