Yeah, techinally "chernie" in Russian means "black," but it is used about eyes and hair to mean "dark" not necessarily "black." Whereas "black" in English means only the exact color (or bruised, if about eyes)...so yeah, "Dark Eyes" is a better translation than "Black Eyes."

@Hedgehog0in0fog Yes...I dont need a translator to confirm that...gypsies originally had black eyes, or eyes so dark that it looked black, thats why this song was written about black eyes. Ochi means eyes but no one is using it in russia because the word eyes means "glaza".Because black usually used to seperate darker skin people from white, people assume that the song is about darker eyes, even some russians think that its is, or they looked in Wiki.Wiki-worst source of information.

@smchildsm actually early gypsies had eyes so dark that it looked black, but because all gypsies are mixed now, they have light eyes(brown,green,blue and gray)...Mostly yellowish and blue eye colors,so this song wouldnt fit to any of them even if it was only about brown eyes, since its not the case anymore. Black eyes and dark eyes sounds just the same but ochi chernie does sound romantic.

@smchildsm Well Idk what part of russia its used in that way, but when I lived there it was used to mean eyes color that looks black not brown or dark brown.Same with hair...if it looks black not brown than people will call it black...Although if you got a bit darker skin color people did refer to it as black.And if eyes are brown, hair brown and skin is brown that people more likely to use black in refrence to that person.So i kinda agree,but not 100%

@the0th hmm yes, that's a good point! I think the huge masses of Russian immigrants in the beginning of 20th century must have brought these old Russian songs with them to Western Europe! :-)

@Hedgehog0in0fog In Russian "black" is very often used to mean dark, whereas in English "black" does not mean dark. You can say "ona chernaya" to mean that she is a dark girl (dark eyes, dark hair) but you cannot say "she is black" to mean the same. Anyway, gypsies have brown eyes, not black eyes. And - "black eyes" has a negative connotation whereas "ochie chernie" does not. So you are losing a lot of the romance of the song by calling it "black eyes."

I think you're wrong.If you say Dark Eyes in russian translation it would be Ochi Temnie.Black Eyes is right translation because gipsies have Black eyes,not brown,not dark.

it's interesting how most of the singers od this song (milman, rebroff and gray) are not ethnic russians. very universal song.
