WPBF 03/23/2011 17:42:54: ...secretary kathleen sebelius is defending the year old law and says it has made coverage more affordable for americans. pkg. script:) signing... it' s been a year since president obama signed the affordable care act into law. nats... but the celebratory ceremony then is more muted now. typing from a new white house video marking the anniversary... to an observance on capitol hill. rep. nancy pelosi/house minority leader: "with this landmark law, we made health insurance and health care a right." a year later, congress remains divided over the law.... rep. john boehner/house speaker: "we'll do whatever we can to make sure obamacare is never implemented." and so does the public -- according to polls. claudia deane/kaiser family foundation: "views about this law have been very partisan from the beginning...and you've seen that kind of division throughout." claudia deane is a pollster for the kaiser family foundation. she says their surveys also show that many americans are still confused about what's actually in the health care overhaul. claudia deane/kaiser family foundation:"for example, four in ten americans still believe as of early this year that there are death panels in the law, something that there are not."this week -- advocates held events around the country to promote the law's impact. ethan rome/health care for america now:"it's provided millions of senior citizens with lower prescription drugs. it's eliminated preexisting conditions for children." but critics like grace marie turner, who coauthored this book, warn the benefits come with a high cost. grace-marie turner/galen institute: "this is a freight train coming at us. there are huge new taxes, new mandates. everyone is going to be required to have federally approved health insurance when this goes into effect in 2014." reporter tag:and 2014 is the year when the bulk of this law takes effect. but about two dozen states are suing the obama administration from fully implementing it. a challenge that could ultimately be decided by the supreme court. a drug used to treat an enlarged prostate... will not be getting global approval. glaxo-smith-kline says... it will not pursue the regulatory permission... after negative feedback from american and swedish experts. the drug is 'avodart'. it's already approved in more than 90 countries.-- back in january, a u-s health panel voted not to expand the drug's application. members said 'avodart' could actually raise the risk... of the most serious type of tumors. another reason, tonight... to start your day with a bowl of cereal. new research shows it could trim up to 20 percent off your risk of developing high blood pressure. scientists found that ceral may be a better source of whole grain, than other foods... because it's usually served without added saturated fats. the nuts, raisins and fruits... also have fiber and potassium....
