Winner 2009 ECE Day Best Presentation Award

Team 7: The 5 Moniteers
Intellimonitor

Team Members: Christopher Arensdorf, Matthew Carey, Shawn Fitzpatrick, Michael Tirgardoon, Andrew Velasco
Customer: Professor Thomas Little (BU ECE)

Our objective is to design a personal system to measure and interpret human posture and movement. Unlike the current products on the market, our system will be optimized for human use and customizable for specific applications such as monitoring elderly movement patterns and sports performance enhancement. Using a system of MEMS sensors, we can characterize posture and gait by applying application-specific algorithms to sampled angular data. Contrary to current designs, our wireless activity monitoring devices (AMDs) will incorporate gyroscopes and a digital compass in addition to an accelerometer, allowing for more accurate data measurements. Software-based Kalman filtering will allow for the integration and stabilization of the sensor readings. Our project team will provide an AMD prototype, the Windows Mobile 6 smartphone application for interacting with the AMDs and displaying the analyzed data, and a secure web interface (http://intellimonitor.bu.edu) for remote access to the analyzed data stored in our database.
