Pope Benedict XVI made a visit to Spain this November (2010). Right after landing he gave a quick interview to several journalists and said something that was rather controversial.
He compared actual secularism in Spain to the one around 1930, when some churches were burnt and priests were killed. As a result the right wingers found an excuse for their rebellion, taking Spain to a cruel civil war and after that to a long period of dictatorship, during what Spain was a "Roman Catholic" regime.
That was, at least, a diplomatic mistake, so to speak.
I don't think he was calling to arms, but he showed the dark side of his agenda.
After that he said (though this video stopped at that point, but I add it in the following text):
"and the dispute, or even better, the fight between faith and modernity, both of them very vivid, takes place nowdays again in Spain. That's why the future of faith and the agreement, not disagreement!, between faith and secularism, has a central and main point in the Spanish culture. Thus, I've thought about all big countries in the Western world, but specially about Spain".
I saw the video in a couple of TV stations within the following two or three hours after the incident ocurred, but after that I never saw it again, even when sometimes the journalists talked about those sentences, they didn't show the video.
If you find any mistake in my transcript please let me know, as English is not my mother language, which is pretty obvious if you read the subtitles.
PLEASE MIRROR THIS VIDEO IF YOU WANT TO. I've uploaded this video and the subtitles to Mega Upload: ?d=8EMU4YFH

He's worried about secularism in Spain? He should be worried about all the child molesters he employs.
