Title: Part of Your World (from "Disney's The Little Mermaid"), 2011
Music/Lyrics: Alan Menken/Howard Ashman
Arr: New orchestration for soprano (Chelsea Picken) & orchestra (with violin solo by Annette Homann)
This is my orchestration from the cabaret. I actually built the story/theme around this song. I was really inspired to do something big with the orchestra, and after seeing this piano/string quartet performance of "part of your world," I found it. It's decidedly more interactive than the original, with a focus on the orchestra and the singer. I went for the Broadway approach: extended, sustained dominant chords, exaggerated tempo changes and caesuras, etc. I aimed to keep the "water's waves" (consistent eight-note ostinato rhythm) flowing throughout the piece and incoporated color with the brass. Even though we had some mishaps during the performance, I think it turned out very well. Chelsea was great a showing that character and emotion I wanted for the piece!!! Thank you so much to the wonderful musicians!

Almost perfect orchestration! All of the little things that you hear in the movie are here in this arrangement. That makes me happy :D

A great orchestration. Well done! I love how there is already countermelody at the beginning of the chorus. I love how you have a harp gliss even though you don't have a harp. There's just so much to listen to. I think the original was more subdued and perhaps more supportive from a storytelling perspective, and this reimagines the piece almost as a bravura art song. Thank you!
