they are corn coarsely ground, sorta like porridge. Eaten in that way for breakfast with butter and milk. Then they are mixed with cheddar cheese or American cheese and shrimp for a side dish or a meal. They are rarely found in a restaurant north of Virginia.

Funny thing to post on YouTube this really , but atleast you've kindly told us what it is ! , Grits to me sounds like someone whose taken the teeth out of a dead person and grinds the teeth inside there mouth with there own teeth , sick i know , but thats what it seems like to me .

Also called hominy grits. Coarsely ground hominy, boiled and sometimes then fried, eaten as a breakfast dish or as a side dish with meats. (If I had to guess, I'd say grits are typically more popular in the southern states. Then again, fried pickles are popular there as well. Blegh!) So what is hominy?
Whole or ground hulled corn from which the bran and germ have been removed by bleaching the whole kernels in a lye bath (lye hominy) or by crushing and sifting (pearl hominy).
