Despite 19 months of a highly restrictive Israeli blockade and a three-week military assault, Hamas remains in control of the Gaza Strip and a majority party in the Palestinian Legislative Council. Israeli, U.S. and Arab leaders need to recognize that if Hamas cannot be beaten militarily, then it must be engaged politically. That means accepting the idea of dealing with a Palestinian unity government that includes Hamas. Such a coalition between Hamas and Fateh is essential for the future of a Palestinian state and peace in the region. Atallah discussed Hamas' history in brief and its status as a socio-political force in Palestinian politics.
