This the first New York solo exhibition of the artist Mr., whose work typically examines Otaku culture in Japan with cartoonish, anime-like two- and three-dimensional representations of joyful adolescents.
Mr.'s large-eyed characters and flat color fields are influenced by the Otaku movement and its Lolita-esque fascination with adolescents.
Mr. lives and works in Saitama, just outside of Tokyo. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts, Sokei Art School in Tokyo in 1996. Mr. was discovered by Takashi Murakami in 1995 and since then has been involved with Murakami's art organization Kaikai Kiki, as both a represented artist and a pivotal staff.

  • in 0:14 there is a nake girl but, at that it is looking? That exists up?

    Sorry for my bad english

  • That "girl" has a secret . . .

  • im confuzzed....wats the thing sticking out of the girl's pants at 0:40?

  • The title of that painting is "I've Got A Secret" - I'll leave it to your imagination as to what that secret might be.

  • This is so over now. Mr. is just a silly illustrator, but it sells and that is what Chelsea is coming to, a clearing house for half-baked ideas!

  • Your comment sounds like the kind I hear from many jealous wanna-be artists who can't reach the kind of success that Mr. has reached, so your reaction is to hate it. Makes me feel sorry for you.

  • Not art? Well . . . that is just your opinion!

  • I kind of agree with you, and I love Mr. When I first saw his characters, I thought they had very generic designs, and basically all looked the same. Now I'm beginning to think that that much is intentional.

  • To be critical.

I find MR's work to be boring when it comes to human characters.

What I like about his work, is his attention to detail and use of bright colors, and I am fond of way he draws reflections in characters eyes.

  • one of the best from asia in my opinion.

  • haha.... I'm assuming you consider yourself to be an Artist... as opposed to an illustrator right? You'd think this argument would be dead by now... If you don't like the Chelsea galleries why do you go there? NYC has plenty of "serious" artists for you to look at. ~lazerhappy
