  • @aNdYmAtTeR actually that was John Cale not Lou Reed.

  • @aebelmonter First of all, "musically good" is subjective. Is Baroque "better" than Clasical Period?

That aside, I never said he was a better composer. I DID say Lou blows frank away lyrically. You might not care about lyrics, but in my estimation, lyrics are half the equation.

90% of music that I think truly SUCKS, sucks because the lyrics are terrible. Good lyrics can save an average piece of music, much more than good music can salvage a song with annoying or uninspired lyrics.

  • @Blogspierre Dude tell me any Velvet Underground or Lou Reed Record that is musicly good as Hot Rats. I Dare you. Not bullshit me about the "influence". Just tell me who is the best composing. Thank you.

  • Anyone who says Lou can't play or sing is missing the whole fucking point of Lou. I love Frank, and he was a very prolific composer, but his influence is nowhere near as far-reaching as VU's. That's a fact. Just open your ears. Name more than a handful of artists that reflect Frank's influence. Also, Lou was leagues ahead of FZ, in terms of lyricism. Frank had a few moments of lyrical brilliance, but VU's lyrics were serious; not scatological nursery rhymes.

  • Better to have Reed to induct Frank than some douchebag metal fuckers. Zappa respected Reed somewhat, and it served/serves as a poignant reminder of Frank's musical stoicism that he should end up having an artist as respected as Reed inducting him and his memory...

  • The Velvet Underground's music was at least as influential as Zappa, however they are/were not particularly memorable as musicians. Zappa, on the other hand, whilst extremely influential in his own right, was probably the most important musician/composer of the 20th Century. That's why TVU were envious..., because they realised that with Zappa, he was a composer of a completely more complex realm than Cale, et al.

  • @aNdYmAtTeR Thanks for those links. What Lou Reed said was harsh, but then again Zappa had been critical of the Velvet Underground, according to that Zappateers thread. Sterling Morrison also criticised Zappa, saying "I hate Frank Zappa. He's really horrible, but he's a good guitar player."

  • @whitedwarf13

Every time I hear Lou Reeds name this quote is the first thing on my mind. It's etched into my brain as the revenge of an total loser. Reeds "music" is made to laugh at. Must have heard it first time in the egihties.

Sorry, can't post the URLs here so I have to send them as a PM. watch your inbox!

    You need more?

  • @aNdYmAtTeR I googled the quote you used, and the only thing that came up was this video, and various repostings of this video on other sites.
