The words were written by Ned Washington and the music was composed by George Bassman. It was a mainstay of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra but covered by Frank Sinatra, who started with this group, Ella Fitzgerald, and even the Ink Spots. Sorry about the visuals--I do have two arms but this was the best take.

  • I'm using the Fakebook version. The Bm7 would be a front end ii sub, but in A major. Am7b5 or Cm, you still have to deal with the E flat note. The thing that I found really hard to do is to play melodies that did not seem to follow the chromatic line F-E-Eb-D internal chromatic line in a way that it was obvious that I was following it. My version also has funny stuff in the bridge in Dm-B7-Dm. At first I didn't like it and found other versions, then decided it would be a challenge to keep it.

  • It is, indeed. The start of the progression is really unusual. The first chord is F, the second E7, and the third Cm. The E7 should go to Am but doesn't, so one has to be continually alert to the sudden need for an Eb note. The Cm makes sense upon hearing as ii-V (Cm-F7) of Bb, but then the Cm goes to D7 as iv-V in G minor, so an F# has to be added a half bar later. The bridge goes to Am, so the key change suggested at the end of the first bar does ultimately happen. All in all, pretty neat.
