A friend just texted me earlier today asking if I had made a song tribute for Cory Aquino. I replied that it crossed my mind but "we'll see".
Incidentally, what was playing on my mp3 player was a draft song of mine entitled "We're In this together". This is a song about the struggles and challenges of long distance love.
For some reason, the lyrics seemed to relate with my memory of Cory's funeral, which I saw live on television. I remember being moved by the sight of her casket passing the people in the streets, covered by our flag. (I witnessed this for real when the procession passed by Ayala avenue the day before)
At that very moment I wasn't just proud of being a Filipino - I was more proud of being a country. For the first time, I saw that we were indeed, "in this together".
I remember asking myself, "so what happens to us now?". What is to become of our beloved Philippines?
For me, her journey back to Ninoy signifies the end of an era.... and a start of a new one. Their long distance love involved the love for the country. How inspiring.
I was born in 1983, the year of Ninoy's death, which sparked the revolution. When I saw Cory's hearse pass right in front of me in Ayala avenue, amidst cheers and "Laban" signs from the people, I had a flashback from 1986 when I was just around 3 years old.
The memory was of people celebrating in the streets of my hometown, Iloilo City. Being so young didn't stop my parents from bringing the whole family along to experience history.
I joined my Lolo and dad riding on top an army tank which paraded around the streets that were covered with yellow confetti. I learned to do the "Laban" sign like the rest. Cory Aquino had just been sworn in as President.
Imagine, it was 22 years ago since I last did that sign and saw showers of yellow confetti. Some memories will forever burn in me.
