Famous scene from the mini-series Roots based on the book by Alex Haley. Kunta has been captured after his escape and is finally broken by force by the overseer. He is given his new name which destroys the last relics of his homeland that he will never see again. Yet hope still remains, for us all.

This was an issue of skin color only because the slave owners made it so. It is not because any one skin color is more or less worthy of existence, or of dignity. History shows that cruelty has been perpetrated by people with many skin colors. Selfish cruelty is the true issue here, a lack of concern for the wellfare of our fellow human. We can't let hatred for the deeds of the individual blind us into committing acts of hatred ourselves. Learn from the past, we are all one race, all human.
