Taekwondo federation accuses Taiwan athlete of cheating, but pictures tell a different tale (2010/11/19)

The uproar continues. Sports officials are furious over the disqualification of a Taiwanese taekwondo athlete at the Asian Games for allegedly attaching illegal sensors to her heels. They say Yang Shu-chun wasn't wearing the sensors during the match, and pictures published in Friday's United Daily News back their claim. Moreover, they want to know why the head of the World Taekwondo Federation has put forward and retracted different reasons for the disqualification.

The scandal surrounding taekwondo athlete Yang Shu-chun's disqualification continues to fester, with the World Taekwondo Federation accusing Yang of cheating by adding two extra sensors to her socks.
But pictures tell their own tale. Before the pre-match inspection, it's clear that there are silver, dotted sensors on Yang's heels. She immediately took them off at the referee's request, and the picture from during the match shows that they're not on her heel.

Liu Tsung-ta
Taiwan Taekwondo Coach
Before the competition, we need to do test kicks on our electric protective gear to see if it can register points. A trial kick is one point. We did one to the left and one to the right. After the two points, the technician to the front said that we needed to remove those two sensors. Before the match, we removed them. Then Yang gave them to me.

After a Philippine announcer and a Korean-Philippine technician spoke, someone turned to Taiwan coach Liu Tsung-ta and took away the two sensors. They were passed on to the technician. Soon after, Yang had victory well in hand, but then was suddenly disqualified.

The footage is clear, but the Asian Taekwondo Union still issued a press release with the title "Shocking Act of Deception by Chinese Taipei." The article accuses Yang of cheating.

Tai Hsia-ling
SAC Minister
It's extremely, extremely unfair to our athletes, which is why I'm furious.

The World Taekwondo Federation has already said that the Asian Taekwondo Union's press release was inappropriate. Nevertheless, it stands by Yang's disqualification, although its reason is unclear. On Wednesday, federation secretary-general Yang Jin-suk said that the older version of socks and sensors Yang Shu-chun used had been banned since 2007. But a day later he changed course, saying the athlete was disqualified for using two extra sensors. On Friday, the secretary-general apologized for putting forward different reasons for the disqualification.

Despite the apology, the Sports Affairs Council is furious at the way Yang Shu-chun has been treated. It is considering asking for a judgment from the International Court of Arbitration for Sport.

  • WTF that was messed up....WTF

  • Yeah, boycott those monkeys' products. That's the best way to hurt them.

korean monkeys are getting a little bit too big fo the little village. Taekwando fighters should boycott the sport. Then they would only have themselves to compete with.

What's the point of holding these events if they don't know how to do it fairly, have hidden agendas or favour their own fighters?

  • How can a korean monkey call anyone a cheat? These korean monkeys are known cheats around the world. Fuck a korean & fuck korea.
