MPGomatic.com gets the word on Alternative Vehicle Solutions' (avs-cng.com) wicked cool CNG-powered Hummer at the 2010 Alternative Fuels & Vehicles Conference (AFVI) in Las Vegas, Nevada. This CNG conversion uses a pair of tanks to achieve a range of up to 600 miles. The Hummer is purpose built as a rescue truck.

  • That's cool but I've never even seen a CNG station in NJ or PA. Nice idea though.

  • @Forgoten214 - that'll change. CNGnow (dot) com currently shows 11 in NJ, 26 in PA, and 96(!) in NY. Most of those are not open to the public. Not sure if there currently *any* public CNG stations in NJ, although there's plenty of propane ...

  • how much does it cost to fill up a car/truck with nat gas?

  • @tbirdsport302 - CNG is currently running between 92 cents and a dollar per gallon in the state of Utah ... roughly one-third the cost of gasoline.

  • How much would one of these bad boys run somebody, cause that's pretty damn awesome. 500-600 eco-friendly miles in a Hummer. Pretty awesome. Lovin' these videos.

  • @MattHutzell - Conversion costs are largely offset by government rebates. The cost of the job depends on the components used ... While this Hummer has two large tanks, most pickup trucks use just one tank.

  • Its not a Hummer if it doesn't Humm?? I see people driving V4 Mustangs all the time. They enjoy it as much as a V8. Hint* Its not the engine, its the car.

  • not to poo-poo using cng, but there are some facts conveniently left out...

    on petrol=14 mpg

    on cng=10-11 mpgge

he admits it with out saying it, 50 gge=500mi

For those us who keep up with this stuff, this is the readily obvious trade off with cng, namely reduced energy density and low-compression engines not being optimal for running cng.

For those who don't, it means in most cases a reduced range and less power. This is offset, in this case, with huge tanks. I don't know about the power.

  • wouldnt these cars be super dangerous, and not to mention expensive ?

  • @ThinkerMister11 - Um, no. It's open to show the CNG tanks.
