I know I have touched on this subject slightly but I wanted to talk about it in more length. Comments and corrective criticism have gone down hill in the past few years. Everyday I see comments like "great capture" "nice shot" "I don't like it" "terrible" "you should quit" but none of those really help the photographer.

Commenting should be a thought out process, something more than you looked and you make a one word response. I know from going threw photo school that we would regularly have discussions about the classes work. We would put our images up in front of the class and speak about each and everyone. We had to give some real insight into why we thought what we though or did what we did.

Its time to take commenting back and think before we just say nice capture. Why do you like the image, what makes it great, good or just ok for you? What could the photographer possibly do to make it better? Think about the things you would like to know about your own photos and start commenting with better comments.

I know its easy to do a drive by comment but its nothing more than a vanity comment.

Lets collectively as the photography community start to leave better comments on each others photos.

  • I like the composition of this video. Great use of the rule of 3rd - you are not centered in the middle of the shot, good use of natural light, and good use of Depth of field - the trees are not distracting us from watching you. Great video!

  • "Hello butterfly~" LOL! :D

  • hellooo butterfly jajaja

  • Part of the freedom of expression is the right to just say "This is nice, this sucks, your video's are crap or you so called expertise is questionable".

Certain scenario's, of course, do ask for a bit of justification, but this excludes the social media all together. A proper justification would be "I believe you are wrong on most things because you use objectively and subjectively interchangeably" or "you are technically inept as proven in video X Y and Z".

  • @leo3604 just what u have in your shot. Going off his example, like where is the sun, what else is in the photo, is everything centered, where is your focus, etc

  • Great Video Jared!

  • I always leave good feedback, but the crap I get back like "great shot" or "wow".

Just dont bother. Tell me why you like it.

  • @R3aper24 I would have to agree with you. I think Jared should have a contest of the most creative/crazy video saying his "Fro Knows" slogan. Lol

  • If you post a photo on what site ever, you ASK people to comment on it. Your photos are great - except from that grandma series...

  • I really think this video/rant. told us nothing, and nothing we really needed to know.

I love feedback, or i wouldn't be on flickr, and i certainly wouldn't show my work as frequently as i do. In the end we all want to get better, and we all want to be unique. or else Jared wouldnt have 32,000 subscribers.

One 1 side, i totally agree, constructive or corrective feedback is always welcome.

on the other, even Jared on his quickfire critiques, i feel is forcing the feedback, and is finding fault.
