In an historic first, East Bay Innovations -- a San Leandro-based non-profit serving people with developmental disabilities (DD) -- embraced the spirit of the Employee Free Choice Act (even before its enacted) by volunteering to remain neutral and agree to card check recognition in a union organizing drive. When a majority of EBI workers signed cards authorizing SEIU Local 1021 to be their representative, EBI accepted the results and began negotiations on a first contract.

This week, employer and union signed that first contract under a sunny East Bay sky at an upbeat public ceremony that included representatives of local State Senators and Assembly members as well as U.S. Rep. George Miller, a sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act.
