Perched atop the beautiful Griffith Park mountains, the Griffith Park Observatory offers one of the best possible views in the greater Los Angeles area. Even if you don't step foot inside the marvelous space and science museum, (which would be a crime unto itself), you would be treated to a vista unlike any other.
Do visit the museum, however - it features a huge pendulum in the lobby which is energy-wise appears to be completely self-sustaining; an original Tesla Coil designed by the father of modern electricity Nikola Tesla (which sends electricity through the air wirelessly to light up nearby fluorescent lighting, by the way); and many other exhibits offering fun and intriguing facts about the solar system and the universe.
One of the highlights is definitely the Planetarium show. As you sit in a reclined position, a completely circular screen above projects distant galaxies, nebulae, and other space anomalies - all accompanied by a spirited live narration.
When a friend or family member is visiting LA, the Griffith Park Observatory is my default introductory attraction - I just love seeing the look on their faces.
