The single American Idiot is about how people let the media run their lives and make decisions for them and tells them what's right and wrong or what's beautiful and ugly instead of making decisions for themselves. I'm guessing you only heard the words "fuck America" and not "Subliminal mindfuck America", which are the correct lyrics.
