There is a simple way to convert a brushed AC motor to synchronous by just soldering a diode between 2 opposite commutator contacts, and running at a lower voltage. Here's the result!

A guy by the name of Clive Penfold made this discovery:

  • @drdreads1 Its between 2 opposite commutators, not brushes (my bad). Search Google for "Clive Penfold motor 4hv". First result has info.

  • this is a realy cool idea, you said the diode goes across the brushes but it looks like its across the contacts of the armature?. is there a schematic for replicating this?
