It depends on your budget and space you have , but about 1000 ltrs (250 gallons) is a good sized small system.

Jade Perch...an amazing Australian native fish that has four times more Omega 3 than any other fish on the planet. Tastes good too, especially steamed or smoked.

absolutely amazing, I'm thinking about a herb garden, this however gave me an idea for some serious plants. Amazing how we are all led to believe that spraying and chemistry is the best solution, meanwhile, the best solution for sustainable food supply is staring right at us with this solution.

So very true Amokvrs. Aquaponics is an ECO system, pure and simple. That is it's beauty. That is where the similarity to Hydroponics and Aquaculture takes a large divergence. Aquaponics relies on natural processes just like a really well found Permaculture garden that relies on all the bacteria, fungi and myriads of critters to make it all work.

Phosphorus is not a problem, enough comes into the system via the fish food...usually. Potassium is a bit more of an issue and needs to be consciously added somehow. Most who are into natural methods do things like bury banana skins in the media beds and the resident worms do the rest. Aquaponics is an ECO system.

Good question and the answer would be too long for here, but see my blog at my website for information on this. In short, it works very well. Search on Google for Practical Aquaponics and follow the links to my blog.
