This video sequence serves quite a few purposes. It documents the origins of the "Crying Clown Logo" as well as presents a lost sequence from the infamous George Tabori / Wiener Kammeroper production of "Der Bajazzo." (Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci in German) The "Crying Clown" idea came about one rehearsal, as George was searching for something unusual for the opening "pre-play" sequence he was trying to direct for the opera. He asked Louis Gentile if "He could draw" Louis Gentile, who happens to be an avid Cartoonist, jumped at the opportunity and promptly drew the first Crying Clown on the Kammeroper wall! He added immediately the "bleeding tear" to his work! The sequence leading up to the Crying Clown scene is a sequence that is often, if not exclusively, edited out when the ORF film production "Der Bajazzo" is aired on European TV. (still pops up once or twice a year!) Originally, the scenes shown here were intermixed with an in depth interview with George Tabori. (an interview that almost caused a mutiny within the cast, because George swore he would never agree to such an interview disturbing the flow of "the work!") Here, the bits with George are edited out, and the sequence pasted back together to form a more true depiction of how this production was performed in Vienna and at the Berlin festival in 87, winning many awards.
