Saskatchewan celebrated its centennial in 2005 so I'm a little late in commemorating prairie grain elevators by showing 100 of these prairie icons. We took these photos over a six year period, and have collected photos from 110 different places in Saskatchewan.

  • Sorry, yep, I know where Marengo is...worked there 2 harvests in 1981 and 85....LOVED every minute of it....these wonderful pictures brought it all back....

I can remember the UGG operators names and the Marengo bar and all my friends and my host family who are STILL my friends...The Coutts.

Just couldn't find Marengo on the slide show!

  • You're correct in noting that Marengo is not included in the video. I limited it to 100 in commemoration of Saskatchewan's 100th birthday. I've posted my photo of Marengo on my blogspot called sask grain elevators (all one word).

  • where's Marengo? !!

  • Marengo is in Saskatchewan, Canada. Google maps should get you there.

  • Scanned slides?

  • Negatives, mostly. Glad you enjoyed them.

  • Hi, I am from Kansas and we sadly don't have many wood elevators left down here. I am wanting to build a model of one because my Great Grandfather and Great Uncle once owned one bearing our name. Would you have or know of any information that shows just how the inside of these were set up with the scale and distributor? Thanks, and loved the vid!

  • i miss the grain elevator

  • @walikaroth Marengo is indeed in this slide show. I work there at the moment, it is called Meridian grain, operating under Providence grain solutions. you can see it at 3:05 since that picture was taken, a silo was added to the west end, and 2 1600 ton silos at the east end. the picture is taken looking at the west end. The second east annex is from the old UGG complex.

  • Great video. For some unknown reason, I love grain evlevators. Never seen one in person, but I still like 'em. Thanks again!

  • Fantastic photo series!! Its sad that the old Fleming elevator 1:37 is gone now. Oldest in Canada at the time. I hear that they are going to move the old elevator from Doonside to Fleming to replace it. I hope it goes through this time.

  • @JohnGalbraith1961

marengo pool elevator now meridian grain was in the pic's with the old ugg anix apart of it now

  • I hate to say this but the elevator at the verey end the one you see twice was the one i fleming sk and was the oldest one in Canada but saddly burt to the ground was fully restored and was opening for tours latter in the year.

  • beautiful vid thanks for sharing

  • @kjgreenwood1985 hey this may be a little late. . there are not many crib elevators used in saskatchewan anymore .. although there are a few.. at one point there were i think around 5000 crib elevators in saskatchewan but now i think its a few hundred as most have been abandoned or tore down . i worked in one that is still operational and was built in 1982.. in the late 90's to 2000's they startedn replacing these with concrete terminals and are now dominant in saskatchewan.

  • Wow, good vid. I work for a company in Iowa that used to build wood cribbed elevators. We haven't done one since about the early 60's since we started using slipform concrete method. I noticed you said that you used negatives for these pictures, how old are they? Are these wooden elevators still operational? If they are that is really impressive
