    A nice idea would be to enable, trough a right click menu on the background, a option to display a colored edge where the layer is larger than the canvas.

    For example, if you have a 100x800 rectangle on a 200x200 canvas a colored line should be displayed on the outside of the canvas border just in the 100px region in which the rectangle is exiting the canvas.

    So you know there are pixels outside the canvas

    You could also make that mark a gradient depending on how far is the farthermost pixel.
