I know some of you like to spell this Crayfish. My ancestory is from Southern Louisiana, you won't find any crayfish there, but crawfish are everywhere. There is an old saying in Louisiana that everything loves a crawfish, a Cajun, a bass , a catfish, sunfish, egrets, cranes, ducks, turtles, otters, raccoons... you get the picture. In other parts of the country, brown trout , smallmouth bass and rainbows all love a crawfish. For trout fishing I would nearly always weight this pattern, like a Zonker or other weighted nymphs. The one tied here is for bass, its unweighted. I want to cast this one over submerged timber and moss beds and strip it in short strips. Another method I have found very effective in standing timber and stump fields is cast near around beside standing timber, give quick strip then let free fall and make slow hand twist retrieves. Real crawfish especially as the water recedes will crawl up on stumps and then drop off and kick away. Especially around Cypress stumps. Its a great pattern everything loves a CRAW-FEESH. Tie this pattern from size 10 up through 1/0 for bass. I have caught some really big bass 6+lbs on this very pattern. Seems to be effective with or without the pinchers (claws). I recommend in colder waters tie olive and black. Crawfish in cold rivers are often olive and black. In the south, olive and orange. Olive and Chartreuse eventhough it is not a natural immitation are also good colors. Red is a pretty misunderstood color for crawfish, while they look that color coming out of the crab boil, that is a pretty unnatural color
