Thats not true..
The original song was "Johnny I hardly knew ya". It was an Irish anti-war song, about when the Irish had to serve in the early 18th century for the British East India Company. The Civil War "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" refers to Patrick Gilmore's (He came up with the lyrics) son in Law, Johhny, who was a soldier in the Union army.

Every time i listen to this song, it makes me want to cry because i remember my friends who was killed in combat over in iraq. This is one of the oldest military war march song around, and it help us remember everyone who fall in combat.
