The 2010 edition of the Electrolux Design Lab competition focuses on creative solutions for compact living. The 2010 brief asked industrial design students to consider how people will prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes in the homes of 2050, when 74%* of the global population are predicted to live in an urban environment. Here are eight concepts that provide a glimpse of the future.

  • why does everything look like an apple product

  • I love how the majority of people who comment have no idea what they're talking about. Students were given a brief to fulfil, not predict how other aspects of life will be or cater for your opinion. Some really good ideas, I loved both of the fridges.

  • and in the end, as does Sandra Bullock. Use the three shells.

  • i appreciate the video...=)

  • I don't understand! Why could we always see so many new super great ideas come out but I've never seen a new technology like those design in the real life????

  • @DrawWithLaura Well... Blu Tak and posters are the next best thing. =P

  • @mastermalpass Have you ever lived in an apartment before? XD

I love your comment, it's really optimistic, but unfortunately it's un-realistic...

Your not allowed to paint walls or put holes in them without permission. No new cupboards... carpet... counter tops... which means everything would stay white, and if I made it otherwise... I would be in VERY big trouble *~*

  • To everyone wondering if anyone at Electrolux is pondering just how exactly they're gonna achieve these whacky designs:

"They say great science is built on the shoulders of giants. Not here, at Aperture/Electrolux we do all our science from scratch - no hand holding."

  • @DrawWithLaura A plain white house is actually perfect, don't look at it like a uniform, look at it like a canvas. Buy some paint, spray up your walls, let your artistic mind flow and do the one thing that Robots can't do for you...

...No Electrolux don't you dare! Art is the one thing left that makes us human.

  • Why would you need a washing machine on your wall when your closet cleans your clothes for you and why would you need a portable dishwasher ??????

  • All good concepts. But who the hell would want a fridge outside their home? Thats insane.

  • I love that "Clean Closet" :P
