  • How long will you fire those buttons for?

  • @albionrulesok -2 hours approx !

  • you need to make your own pottery bird feeder for outside that window :)

  • I just had a thought...if you get some stainless steel rods to go across the bottom section from side to side~ they would hold the shelf. They would need to be somewhat thick so they don't buckle but it would work and you would only need to go through the fiber in 4 little spots where the rods go through.

  • I'm pleased to help. I've been doing various research into kilns recently as I may be making a large kiln, using fibre blanket, later this year. So keep an eye on my YouTube channel.

    Mark.

  • @brookfieldpottery Thanks Mark this is a great help to me. I found it, by your description, for sale on eBay.

  • Hi, I replied to you yesterday but it didn't seem to go through: So, I would suggest body soluble FB as it is safe. Most research suggests that you need to wear a mask all the time with normal blanket, as even opening a kiln after firing can stir up dangerous fibres.

Most kiln designs suggest at least 1" (25mm). You can buy 2"(50mm) and I would say that the thicker you buy the more insulating properties it has, so buy the thickest you can afford. Most good suppliers stock this now.

  • The complexity behind modern kiln building relies upon efficiency and availability of materials, any current build has a degree of heat escape due to perforations in the structure, conduction and radiation are resisted by materials with many small pockets of air such as Aerocrete and reflective sheeting.

So I was wondering, could you make a small kiln from the wheel?

Whereby you could craft any degree of heat-trapping structure inside it,

It would be an interesting set of videos to see

  • Thanks brookfieldpottery, Yes, I was asking you cause you seem to know something about it and Simon usually doesn't respond to comments.

I really don't know anything about this material. I see all types for sale: soluble ceramic fiber blanket, Ceramic Fiber Blanket, Steiner Carbon Fiber, Art Clay Fiber blanket, Non-Ceramic Fiber Blanket.....

I don't know which type to buy. Could you give me a specific name and description of the correct material for this use?

  • Not sure if you are asking me or Simon, but in the UK (and I assume in the States too) most Potters Suppliers sell both the normal and body soluble. I have also found both for sale on a well known online auction site (you know the one!).

  • like the tomy cooper bit ", just like that "we made a small kiln this summer and used the same burner , we copyed the kilin from an old leach book ! we got it up to cone 10 on very small test things

  • Is it not too small? Thos fiber takes alot spac.

  • As for your mini kiln, do I see a kind of clay strap on top to hold it ? Great anyway, can't wait to see your next clip! Meanwhile I'll go KP... Florence
